Plan A Pilgrimage to the Sorrowful Mother Shrine
Are you looking for a peaceful and inspiring place to visit? A place to make a private day of reflection? A pilgrimage for a group? Plan now to visit this holy and historic shrine dedicated to the Sorrowful Mother.
Paved walkways winding among tall and colorful trees lead to Stations of the Cross and replicas of Lourdes and the Sepulcher Grotto – favorite places of prayer and meditation. One can see various wildlife as well: turkeys, deer, squirrels and birds. Your time of prayer may include, confession, morning Mass, or spending quiet time in the beautiful historic Chapel. Walking the wooded pathways will refresh the body, mind and soul.
The original Shrine Chapel was built in 1850. In 1870 a larger chapel was constructed and included a spire and bells to guide the pilgrims. On August 15, 1912, the chapel was destroyed by fire. By September of 1913, the chapel was rebuilt and included an enlarged sanctuary, a semi-circular apse for the new altar, and a new round-topped tower. This is the chapel we use today.
The Shrine cafeteria is available any day of the week for groups of 15 or more.
Advance reservations are required. Please call: 419-483-3435, ext. 101.
At the present time, the Sorrowful Mother Shrine has no overnight accommodations or overnight retreats. We are able to provide a Day of Reflection, or a Day of Recollection. There are ample overnight accomodations available in nearby towns. The Shrine is located less than 40 minutes from the shores of Lake Erie.
